First issued 1870. Tabloid newspaper based in Birmingham and distributed around Birmingham, the Black Country, Solihull and parts of Warwickshire, Worcestershire and Staffordshire. The newspaper is currently owned by Trinity Mirror Group, which also owns Daily Mirror and Birmingham Post.
The Manchester Evening News is a regional daily newspaper covering Greater Manchester; following its sale by Guardian Media Group in early 2010, it became owned by Trinity Mirror plc. Editor Maria McGeoghan gave evidence that the paper worked to the Trinity Mirror Code of Business Conduct. She gave examples of how that worked in practice and cited examples where the paper had held off publishing information on grounds of privacy.
Evidence on behalf of the Cardiff-based regional paper, which is owned by the Trinity Mirror Group, was given by the editor, Tim Gordon. Asked about hospitality, he told the Inquiry that the average South Wales Echo reporter spent 71p a week on entertaining.
